The Old Northwest
RIYL: Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai, Grails, Swans, Natural Snow Buildings & The Dead Texan
With riffs that creep out of the cold and lonely depths of the midwest, The Old Northwest create songs that crawl through despair, build towards hope, and ultimately spiral into the murky distance from whence they came. Simultaneously sad and beautiful, mournful and uplifting, The Old Northwest constructs a soundtrack for a world crumbling at our own hands. Guitarist Pete Railand, drummer Russ Korinek, and bassist turned lap-steel player Jacob Sutrick have been on-again off-again bandmates over the past two decades. Joining together again in 2013 as The Old Northwest, they have explored nuanced styles and instrumentation to create uniquely thick, melancholic tones and drones that linger through the quiet to take listeners on a hypnotic musical journey conjuring images of bleak landscapes and forgotten times. After a handful of limited cassette releases, The Old Northwest, along with Triple Eye Industries, is releasing a very limited-edition lathe-cut 12″ EP with elaborate packaging designed, printed, and assembled by artist/guitarist Pete Railand.
